An open letter to Ster Kinekor and Nu Metro
Boy oh boy, have you guys had a bumper past few weeks or what? And it looks like things are only going to get better what with all the rad movies coming out soon. This summer movie season in the US is turning out to be quite the epic event.
I was doing some research for another article I was writing and I stumbled across the numbers for The Avengers… not too shabby, even by South African Standards – R26million and counting. It’s done over $650,000,000 internationally and over $350,000,000 in the US alone. Kevin Feige is a happy, happy man, I would imagine.
And it’s all thanks to Joss Whedon.
The dude’s a master of directing ensemble casts and the projects that he did manage to get off the ground have been nothing less than fantastic – remember Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which went on for seven seasons), Angel (which managed five seasons), and the ill-fated but just as amazing Firefly and Serenity.
I think Whedon has proven his case that given the right actors, enough budget and a relative amount of freedom, he’s capable of making magic on the screen.
Very few people know this, but Whedon was working on another project in parallel with The Avengers alongside one of his Avengers cast members – Chris Hemsworth – called The Cabin in the Woods.
It’s a comedy horror of sort, but something that is right up Whedon’s alley and I have no doubts that it’s a great movie. Hell, he’s teamed up with Cloverfield writer, Drew Goddard, for this flick so there’s a lot going for it.
Despite being handed from one studio to the next, The Cabin in the Woods finally saw the light of day at South by Southwest in March this year and it’s won a lot of critical acclaim. It’s Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 90%, it has a Metacritic score of 72% and has been labelled a “Game Changer” by Spill.com, whcih compared it to the cult classic Evil Dead II. Wow.
Come on, tell me that doesn’t look awesome.
Sadly, though, I’ve trawled the Ster Kinekor and Nu Metro websites and it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing this film in SA any time soon. You might think that it doesn’t have the wide appeal of The Hunger Games or The Three Stooges (*koff*wheeze*), but I think you may be surprised.
I think if it were marketed properly locally, playing on the strengths that it’s “from the director that brought you The Avengers” and “Starring THOR!”…you might be surprised. I think you underestimate the local young adult/geeky market a little.
It’s turned a profit since it opened almost three months ago in the US, it’s made more at the box office than many of the so-called “blockbusters” that we’ve had to endure on local cinema screens of late and I just think it’ll be a crying shame if we have to wait months before we see this movie in local theatres, if at all.
So, come on, we’ve seen what Joss is capable of. Let’s see The Cabin in the Woods before we have to resort to piracy.
Love and kisses,
