The nominees for the 2nd Annual Comics Choice Awards were revealed on Friday afternoon at an intimate press gathering at the nerve centre of Johannesburg comedy, Parker’s Comedy in Fourways.
Said comedian John Vlismas, “Well, we’re in South Africa. This is the media.”
Vlismas was able to unveil the coveted Waldo statuettes, each with a street value of R13 000, with a 23-carat gold crown.
The nominees were announced by the esteemed Comedy Elders – and Mark Banks – with Cape Town’s Laz Gola hosting proceedings.
Leading the pack of nominees is the first South African comedian to perform on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Trevor Noah.
This year’s Lifetime Achiever Award goes to the legendary Joe Parker, who beamed with delight at the honour.
Parker will be ceremonially grilled by his adoring comic peers on 26 June, ahead of the awards ceremony on 10 July.
Laughed Vlismas, “I just can’t believe we’re getting to grill you in your own club!”
Said comedy icon Joe Mafela, before announcing the nominees for Best Newcomer, “When we started, we did this for nothing. These days in comedy, when you do something, you add something.”

In the vacuum between dark and light, Siouxsie Sioux and Emmylou Harris, Amelie and Travis Bickle, Huntress Thompson is an idiot lost, and reporting from the field. If you’re after irrational, impassioned rants about cupcakes and Johnny Cash (and you probably aren’t), she’s grumpy, but she’s your girl.
