Awesome this week in books

By Deanna Campbell

It’s no secret that I love books. Over the years, I’ve spent countless hours in libraries, at bookshops, and just recently, on my Kindle, immersing myself in other worlds. Here are some books I think are worth checking out this week:

Scar Tissue – Anthony Kiedis

“When you realize that there’s a name and a description for this condition that you thought was insanity, you’ve identified the problem, and now you can do something about it.”

I’m generally not a fan of autobiographies, but I read Scar Tissue many years ago and to this day, I remember almost every single word.

11 22 63 – Stephen King

“For a moment everything was clear, and when that happens you see that the world is barely there at all. Don’t we all secretly know this? It’s a perfectly balanced mechanism of shouts and echoes pretending to be wheels and cogs, a dreamclock chiming beneath a mystery-glass we call life. Behind it? Below it and around it? Chaos, storms. Men with hammers, men with knives, men with guns. Women who twist what they cannot dominate and belittle what they cannot understand. A universe of horror and loss surrounding a single lighted stage where mortals dance in defiance of the dark.”

To this day, It remains one of my favourite books. Often, after rereading my tattered copy for the hundreth time, I feel like reading something more from Stephen King. I recently finished 11 22 63 and, in true Stephen King fashion, when I put it down I spent hours marvelling at the amazing worlds and characters Mr King has the ability to create.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go!!! – Dr Seuss

“So be sure when you step, Step with care and great tact. And remember that life’s A Great Balancing Act. And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed) Kid, you’ll move mountains.”

Feeling a little down? It’ll take you all of 5 minutes to go through Oh, The Places You’ll Go!!, but it’ll be time well spent…

Deanna Campbell

Deanna spends her days buried in a jumble of words and her nights trying to balance family life and everything in between, all while doodling the name Grohl on her notepad and watching reruns of Supernatural. If it’s on TV, she’s seen it. If it’s the latest fad diet… she’s tried it. She’s got a lot to say.

Be warned.
