Disney has just acquired Lucasfilm – the film studio behind the Star Wars franchise – for $4bn.
What does this mean? Well, Disney now has all the rights to Star Wars, which means that we could possibly see more movies and even that shelved Star Wars TV series coming out in the next few years.
Disney has already hinted to the fact that it has big plans for Star Wars, and that we could possibly see a new Star Wars movie as soon as in 2015.
This is a very good thing for a bunch of reasons. First, Lucas has finally let go, which means that a new generation of filmmakers can now give the franchise the treatment it deserves. I think after the last trilogy (Episodes 1 – 3) flopped in the eyes of fans, there was a desperate need to get Lucas as far from Star Wars as possible.
Secondly, Disney owns Marvel. The Avengers. I rest my case.
And Third, Disney has a kak-load of money so we can expect to see a lot of new Star Warsy stuff coming out, that isn’t ANOTHER re-mastered original trilogy.
This news excites me…a lot…I might just pee a little.
