If there’s one thing that JJ Abrams can do right, it’s keep his most valuable projects under nine different levels of secrecy without much of a leak. We saw it with his reboot of Star Trek back in 2009 and we’re seeing it now with his much- (MUCH) awaited sequel – Star Trek: Into Darkness.
We only recently (like in September) found out that JJ’s sequel will be called “Into Darkness” and the only other little snotchie we had was a 3-frame “clip” that he was allowed to show on Conan O’Brien’s TV Show (click to view).
But there was some good news yesterday when we saw the first official poster for the movie:
And a tweet from Simon Pegg (who plays Scotty in the movie) that there’s a trailer incoming on 6 December:
Sorry, I’m a Trek nerd to the core. I practically made love to my Blu-ray copy of JJ’s reboot.
So, what do we know so far?
Well, we have an official synopsis:
“When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organisation has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
“With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.
“As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.”
But we still don’t know which Star Trek villain Benedict Cumberbatch is playing, although rumours that he’s going to play the iconic villain Khan refuse to die, despite having been denied again and again by studio and production spokes-Peons.
The more likely villain for Cumberbatch to play would be Gary Mitchell, the disgruntled Starfleet officer who gets god-like powers after exposure to the energy barrier around the galaxy and develops a healthy hate for Kirk and everything he stands for. This is especially after the reference to “one man weapon of mass destruction” in the synopsis.
Either way, May 2013 can’t come quick enough and until then the poster and (no doubt) the trailer will be firmly placed in my spank bank right next to the Sexy Charity Calendar featuring Tricia Helfer and KateeSackhoff form Battlestar Galactica.
