By Huntress Thompson
A few days ago Jimmy Fallon, champion of the adorable, made Mariah Carey borderline tolerable for a few minutes as The Roots joined them for a cover All I Want For Christmas, perhaps one of the most inescapable Christmas songs ever. [video]
Today, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs song of the same name (not a cover) makes No. 2 on our A Very Vandal Christmas series.
Thick with reverb and brash hope, like many Yeah Yeah Yeahs songs, this quivering piece of dreampop is everything the holidays are about: wishing against wish for what you really want, especially when it’s unlikely you’ll get it, because this is one of the only times in the year that you’re encouraged to wish upon things.
As festive items go, All I Want For Christmas is egg nog: Sluggish, but cheerful and mischievous, and you feel terribly lyrical after a dose or two. Enjoy this adorable jingle bell jingle.
All I want for Christmas is for you to be near
Warm me up with kisses and cheer
I think I may have missed it, maybe even wished it
My only Christmas wish is for you to be near
In the vacuum between dark and light, Siouxsie Sioux and Emmylou Harris, Amelie and Travis Bickle, Huntress Thompson is an idiot lost, and reporting from the field. If you’re after irrational rants about cupcakes and Johnny Cash (and you probably aren’t), she’s grumpy, but she’s your girl.
